Baby sitting on a toilet

The “Potty Training Question” is one of the biggest sources of stress and pressure for parents. Should you start now? Are you behind? Is the child next door already wearing big kid pants?

Let’s clear the air: Potty training is a developmental milestone, not a race. It’s less about a specific birthday and more about brain-body connection. Starting too early, before your child shows physical and emotional readiness, often leads to frustration for everyone (and more laundry!).

Here at Abundant Blessings CDC, we see dozens of children successfully transition out of diapers every year. We believe success comes from recognizing the signs! Here is our simple checklist to determine if your child is truly ready to start this exciting journey.

1. The Physical Readiness Checklist

This is about whether your child’s body can physically handle the process.

  • Dry Spells: Is your child staying dry for at least two hours during the day, or are they dry immediately after a nap? This indicates that their bladder muscles are strong enough to hold urine.
  • The Poop Schedule: Does your child have predictable, soft bowel movements that are not always happening inside the diaper (meaning they are waiting to poop)? Consistency is key!
  • Physical Ability: Can they easily walk, run, and pull their pants up and down without help? The independence to handle clothing is a huge logistical win.

2. The Cognitive Readiness Checklist

This is about whether your child understands the process and the basic concepts.

  • Communication: Can your child use simple words or gestures to communicate needs? They don’t need to say, “Mommy, I need to use the potty,” but they should be able to say “Pee-pee,” “Poop,” or point to their diaper.
  • Discomfort: Do they show awareness that they have peed or pooped? They might tug at their diaper or ask to be changed right after. This shows the mind is connecting to the body’s sensations.
  • Following Directions: Can they consistently follow a simple two-step direction, like, “Pick up the block and put it in the bin”? This skill is necessary for following the steps of potty time.

3. The Emotional Readiness Checklist

Often the most overlooked, emotional readiness determines how smoothly the process will go.

  • Desire to Be Clean: Does your child show interest in wearing underwear or express a dislike for dirty or wet diapers? This desire is a powerful motivator!
  • Curiosity: Do they show interest in watching you or other family members use the bathroom?
  • Willingness to Please: Are they open to praise and motivated by positive reinforcement? If they get easily defiant or resist all adult suggestions, it might be better to wait for a calmer period.

If your child checks most of the boxes above, they are likely ready! Now, ditch the pressure, celebrate the small wins, and remember that accidents are part of the learning process.

At Abundant Blessings CDC, our caring teachers are here to support this milestone with consistency and positive reinforcement, making the transition seamless between home and school. We believe in following the child’s lead, reducing anxiety, and building their independence one successful bathroom trip at a time.
