It’s tough when your sweet, happy baby suddenly transforms into a fussy, wailing bundle of nerves—especially when you can’t immediately figure out why! Most often, that distress comes down to two culprits: a rumbling tummy or those sharp little teeth pushing their way through the gums.
First, let’s take a deep breath. What you are feeling is normal, and you are not alone. There are safe, effective ways to bring relief! For general information on recognizing the common symptoms of teething, the Mayo Clinic has a great resource you can check out.
Here at Abundant Blessings CDC, our infant care providers are experts in gentle comfort. We want to share our favorite tried-and-true techniques to bring calm back to your house!
1. Taming the Tummy Trouble (Gas & Colic)
Tummy troubles often hit in the late afternoon or evening (the dreaded “Witching Hour”) because baby’s digestive system is still immature, and they tend to swallow more air when they feed or cry.
- Bicycle Legs: Lay your baby on their back and gently “bicycle” their legs toward their chest. This gentle pressure can help move trapped gas through the digestive tract.
- The Tummy Tuck: Try holding your baby belly-down across your forearm or lap while gently rubbing their back. The slight pressure on their abdomen can be surprisingly soothing and helps get that trapped gas bubble moving.
- Burp Breaks: If you bottle-feed, pause halfway through the bottle to get a good burp. For breastfed babies, pause when they naturally break suction. Less gulping means less air going in!
- Warmth: A warm bath or a warm compress (like a clean, warmed washcloth—check the temperature first!) placed gently on their tummy can help relax muscles and ease painful cramps.
2. Teething Relief: Cool & Counter Pressure
When those first teeth start to poke through, the gums become swollen, tender, and incredibly itchy. Babies crave counter-pressure to dull the pain.
- Chilly Chew: Give your baby a clean, rubber teething ring that has been chilled in the refrigerator. Tip: Don’t freeze it solid; that can be too harsh on their tender gums! A chilled, wet washcloth tied in a knot and refrigerated also works wonders.
- Gum Massage: Wash your hands thoroughly, then use a clean finger or the back of a small, cold spoon to gently massage the painful spots on their gums. The light pressure can provide immediate, comforting relief.
- Keep It Dry: Excessive drooling from teething can cause painful rashes on the chin and chest. Gently wipe the drool often (don’t rub!) to keep the skin dry and healthy.

3. The Magic of Movement & Sound
Sometimes, the crying is simply a sign of overstimulation, or sometimes, it’s just the baby needing to release stress. When nothing else works, try returning to the basics: the 5 S’s (Swaddling, Side/Stomach Position, Shushing, Swinging, Sucking).
- Rhythmic Motion: Rocking, swaying, or even just dancing gently with your baby can work wonders. The rhythm reminds them of being safely tucked inside the womb.
- White Noise: The loud, static-like sounds of a vacuum cleaner, a running shower, or a dedicated white noise machine can often calm a crying baby by drowning out other noise and providing a familiar sound environment.
